Number Memory Game
Test your short-term memory: a number flashes on screen, then you type it back. Each level adds one more digit. How many can you remember? See how you compare to the ~7-digit average.
Memorize the number, then type it back. It gets one digit longer each level.
Most people remember about 7 digits. How far can you go? Scores stay in your browser.
About This Tool
The number memory game is a simple test of your short-term (working) memory: a number appears on screen for a moment, then disappears, and you type it back from memory. Each level adds one more digit, so the challenge grows the further you get.
The magic number seven
In a famous 1956 paper, psychologist George Miller observed that most people can hold about seven items — "seven plus or minus two" — in short-term memory at once. That is roughly why phone numbers settled around seven digits. This game lets you find your own limit, which usually falls between five and nine digits.
How to remember more
The single most effective trick is chunking: grouping the digits into meaningful blocks. "4 9 2 8 3 7 1" is hard, but "492-8371" (like a phone number) is easier because you hold two chunks instead of seven digits. Other techniques include reading the number in a rhythm, or associating pairs of digits with familiar dates or ages.
Why practise it?
Working memory underpins mental arithmetic, following instructions, and holding a thought while doing something else. Games like this are a light way to exercise it — and a fun benchmark to compare with friends.
Numbers are generated and checked entirely in your browser; nothing is stored beyond your current session.
