About This Tool

Nepal officially uses the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar, also known as the Vikram Samvat. It is the legal calendar for government documents, official records, fiscal years, and public holidays. Every Nepali professional needs to convert between BS and AD (Gregorian) dates regularly — for bank documents, government forms, tax filings, and business contracts.

What is Bikram Sambat?

Bikram Sambat is a solar calendar based on ancient Hindu astronomical calculations. The current era began in 57 BCE by Gregorian reckoning. As of 2025 AD, the current BS year is 2082. BS is ahead of AD by approximately 56 years and 8.5 months.

The BS year is divided into 12 months (Baisakh through Chaitra), but month lengths are not regular — they vary from 29 to 32 days per month, and the lengths change year to year based on solar calculations. This is why conversion requires lookup tables rather than a simple formula.

Month names

| BS Month | Approx. AD Period | |----------|-------------------| | Baisakh (1) | Mid-April – Mid-May | | Jestha (2) | Mid-May – Mid-June | | Ashadh (3) | Mid-June – Mid-July | | Shrawan (4) | Mid-July – Mid-August | | Bhadra (5) | Mid-August – Mid-September | | Ashwin (6) | Mid-September – Mid-October | | Kartik (7) | Mid-October – Mid-November | | Mangsir (8) | Mid-November – Mid-December | | Poush (9) | Mid-December – Mid-January | | Magh (10) | Mid-January – Mid-February | | Falgun (11) | Mid-February – Mid-March | | Chaitra (12) | Mid-March – Mid-April |

Fiscal year in Nepal

Nepal's fiscal year runs from Shrawan 1 BS (around July 15–16 AD) to Ashadh 31 BS (around July 15–16 AD the following year). When filling income tax forms or discussing salary slabs, Nepali professionals always reference the BS fiscal year (e.g., FY 2081/82).
