About This Tool
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 (2017). While HEIC offers 40–50% smaller file sizes than JPEG at equivalent quality, it remains incompatible with most Windows PCs, older Android devices, and many web platforms. Converting to JPEG is the universal solution.
Why iPhones use HEIC
Apple adopted HEIC because HEVC (H.265) compression halves the storage needed for photos without any perceptible quality loss. A photo that would be 4 MB as JPEG is 2 MB as HEIC. For users taking thousands of photos, this doubles effective storage capacity.
Compatibility issues
- Windows requires the "HEVC Video Extensions" from the Microsoft Store (paid) to open HEIC files natively - Most web upload forms don't accept HEIC - Most Android devices cannot open HEIC - Older MacOS (pre-High Sierra 2017) cannot open HEIC - Most image editors require plugins or conversion
Quality considerations
Converting HEIC to JPEG is a transcoding step: HEIC → raw pixels → JPEG. Both steps involve lossy compression. At quality 90+, the difference is imperceptible, but repeated transcoding degrades quality. Convert once, keep the original HEIC if possible.
EXIF metadata
This tool can optionally preserve EXIF metadata (camera settings, GPS location, date/time) when converting. GPS data is included by default — disable it if you want to share photos without location information.
