HEIC vs JPG: Why Your iPhone Photos Won't Open — and How to Fix It
You email a photo from your iPhone to a colleague on Windows, and it won't open. Or you try to upload it to a government portal and the form rejects the file. The culprit is almost always HEIC, the format iPhones have shot in since 2017. Here is what it is, why it causes trouble, and how to convert it without losing your photos to a sketchy website.
What HEIC actually is
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores images compressed with HEVC (H.265), the same codec used for 4K video. Apple adopted it in iOS 11 because it is dramatically more efficient than JPEG: a photo that would be 4 MB as JPEG is about 2 MB as HEIC, at the same visual quality. For users shooting thousands of photos, that roughly doubles effective storage.
It also supports things JPEG cannot: 16-bit color depth, transparency, and multiple images in one file (which is how Live Photos work).
Why it won't open everywhere
The efficiency comes at the cost of compatibility:
- Windows needs the paid "HEVC Video Extensions" to open HEIC natively.
- Most upload forms — job portals, government sites, older CMSes — only accept JPG/PNG.
- Many Android devices and older software can't read it.
- Older macOS (pre-High Sierra) can't either.
So while HEIC is technically superior, JPEG remains the universal language of images. When something must "just work" for anyone, you convert to JPG.
Does converting lose quality?
Converting HEIC → JPG is a transcode: HEIC is decoded to raw pixels, then re-encoded as JPEG. Both steps are lossy, so in theory you lose a little. In practice, at JPEG quality 90+, the difference is imperceptible. The real rule is: convert once, keep the original. Repeatedly re-saving a JPEG (edit, save, edit, save) is what visibly degrades an image, not a single high-quality conversion.
The privacy problem with online converters
Most "HEIC to JPG" websites upload your photos to their servers to convert them. Your photos often contain EXIF metadata — GPS coordinates, timestamps, the device model — so you may be handing your location history to an unknown third party. For personal photos, ID scans, or anything sensitive, that is a real risk.
